My gaze, thoughts and memories attach to a fragment, a split of a second, an irrelevant detail that is so heavy. As I look closer, the image expands infinitely. I remember, feel, sense and experience everything – it is all condensed within this detail.
I think about the physicality of feeling, seeing and experiencing – what kinds of nonverbal impressions and affects can painting communicate. I think about how we relate to other bodies through our own bodies – chalice and ciborium. The figures I paint are anonymous, bodies rather than people. As I paint, I peel off layers of reference and narration in order to get closer to that core where everything is concentrated. The paintings, their themes and subjects are both specific and unspecified, familiar and anonymous, intimate and distant.
